You Like Pies? How About Some Wonderfully Intricate Halloween Monster Pies

Jessica Leigh Clark-Bojin of Pies Are Awesome (previously) has been creating wonderfully intricate Halloween monster pies that range from really spooky monsters to familiar monsters from childhood, including the beloved Grover, aka The Monster at the End of This Book.

Clark-Bojin explained that this was her favorite book while growing up.

And my brother and my favorite book, which we forced my mother to read us over and over and over, was “The Monster at the End of this Book” staring Lovable Furry Old Grover. This pie is my humble homage to my favorite childhood book…

On November 10th, 1969 a little show called @SesameStreet hit the airwaves on PBS, and a generation of children of all races, nationalities, income levels and abilities found a voice… and a host of furry new friends! 💕 If you haven’t read up on the show’s history and the controversy surrounding ground breaking decisions (at the time) to include a diverse cast, set the show in an inner city neighborhood, and deal with real emotional challenges facing kids, do yourself a favor and check out their website. Since it’s inception the show has continued to blaze the trail for marginalized kids and has given us some of society’s most beloved characters… I grew up with Sesame Street and have such fond memories of the show’s animated segments (onetwotheefourfivesixseveneightnineteneleventwelve pinball, ladybug’s picnic, ten banana cream pies, etc.) I loved my Oscar the Grouch doll (that was my nickname as a rather serious toddler 😂) And my brother and my favorite book, which we forced my mother to read us over and over and over, was “The Monster at the End of this Book” staring Lovable Furry Old Grover. This pie is my humble homage to my favorite childhood book, and my way of saying Happy Birthday, and thank you, to the global institution that is Sesame Street. Here’s to another 50 years of life, learning, and kindness! ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜 ⠀ What is your favorite Sesame Street memory? Did you have a favorite toy? A favorite episode or cartoon? A favorite character? Let me know in the comments below! And check out the big 50th bday special tonight on @hbo 😊 ⠀ ⠀ #ThisIsMyStreet #HappyBirthdaySesameStreet #sesamestreet50 #sesamestreetparty #sesamestreet #monsterpie

Here’s my Spooky Pie #2 – The Bedlam, aka “Other Mother” from Coraline!🕷🕸🥧🧵 Thank you to everyone who suggested I bake something “with spiders” and “something from Coraline.” For those unfamiliar with the book/movie “Other Mother” is a kind of succubus creature that starts out looking like Coraline’s mother (except with button eyes) and slowly transforms into a super spooky spider lady with sewing needles for fingers so she can steal people’s eyeballs and sew buttons in their sockets. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Yes, it is a kids’ movie. 😂 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ No doubt those of you in the baking world recognize the “spoke” design in the background! When I was deciding on the 🕸 design for the Bedlam and doodling in my notebook, it dawned on me that Lauren Ko’s spoke pie would be a perfect artsy backdrop for her – so I reached out and asked if she minded if I did an homage to her famous design and she said yes! It took me a few tries to get it right (you can see my unadorned version if you swipe) but I learned a ton from the process. Failure is always my best teacher – as long as I eventually figure it out 😜 Check out Lauren’s beautiful pies at @lokokitchen ! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Okay! For my next pie I’m leaning towards Nightmare Before Christmas, Carrie, or Over the Garden Wall… what’dya reckon? Let me know in the comments below – and don’t forget to submit your #HalloweenPieArt to the collab! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #spiders #othermother #coraline #coralinefanart #monsterpie

Despite what people say, Halloween isn’t just for grownups 😜 So! When my 6 year old asked if we could make a special Halloween pie together and share it with you all on my channel, I figured I’d better say yes… even if the result is a bit different than what you are used to from me! Without further ado, I present to you “Cillian’s All-Flavor Monster Pie!” He’s really hoping you like it, and hovering over my shoulder waiting for me to read the comments to him 😂 ⠀ How many of you do holiday baking with kidlets? Do you enjoy the creative abandon, or get stressed out by the mess and destruction of property? 😝 Lemme know in the comments below what you bake with your little munchkin friends! ⠀ I’ll be posting some making of video in my stories soon in case you’d like to have a go at baking this Monster Pie with your monsters this Halloween! ⠀ #bakingwithkids #monsterpie #halloweenpie #monstercake #monstercookies #kidsbakingchampionship #monsterparty #piefun #ilovepie #thanksgiving #monsterpie #monstermouthpie

Let the Halloweening begin with my first spooky pie offering of the season- a “Slimer” apple/cherry fakeout pie! 🍏🍒🥧 This pie is actually two pies in one- I made a 1 inch thick cherry galette (made to look like a full pie) with some “slime holes” cut out of it, and sat that on top of a full green apple pie. Slimer is also made of pie pastry, and “slimed up” with a bit of corn syrup. Swipe to see how it was made! ⠀⠀ Big ‘ol props to pie-oneer @cor98004 for suggesting the Ghostbusters theme! 👻 Now! What’s my second pie going to be? You tell me in the comments below! ⠀⠀ And don’t forget to submit your own entry to the #HalloweenPieArt challenge – just use the hashtag, tag me in the description and post your spooky pie any time between now and Nov 1st and you might just win some lovely pie art decorating supplies courtesy of @kitchenjukeboxinsider! ⠀⠀ #ghostbusters #slimer #applepie #halloweenfood

My first spooky October pie is… 🥁🥁🥁a “Where the Wild Things Are” wild berry pie! 🥧💜👑 ⠀ I’m not sure why, but when I was sifting through my reams of spooky pie sketches and all of your awesome suggestions, my brain kept going back to the image of Max and the Wild Rumpus… I’ve always been a huge Maurice Sendak fan, ever since my mum first read us his books. His work was so different from all our other books – so bizarre and compelling. I really enjoyed making this pie and getting a chance to revisit the story! How about you? Any Sendak fans in the house? ⠀ Tag a little monster in your life, and let me know what you’d like to see next in my spooky Halloween pie series and I promise the next one will be a followers-choice pick! #🥧>∞ #piesareawesome #piestagram #pastryart #thepieous #ilovepie #pieart #yeahbutwhatdoesitlooklikebaked #mauricesendak #thanksgivingpie #undiscoveredbaker #f52gram @thefeedfeed @thecupcakeproject @buzzfeedfood @tastemade @thebakefeed #thebakefeed #piecrust #buzzfeast #gloobyfood #bakemag #wherethewildthingsareparty #bakeandshare #onmytable #food52 #wherethewildthingsare
